Health and Safety Policy for Movers Elephant and Castle
Movers Elephant and Castle is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, clients, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks and promoting safe working practices across all services, including domestic and commercial moves, packing, loading, transportation, and unloading.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and property damage through effective planning, supervision, and continuous improvement. Health and Safety considerations form an integral part of our operational decision-making and are treated with equal importance to quality and customer service.
We aim to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures to ensure our removal operations are carried out safely and responsibly, whether at clients premises, on the road, in storage environments, or at any other work location.
Legal Compliance
Movers Elephant and Castle will comply with all applicable Health and Safety legislation and recognised industry best practice relevant to removal and transportation services. We will monitor changes in legal and regulatory requirements and update our procedures as necessary to maintain compliance.
All employees are expected to cooperate with management to ensure that legal and company requirements are met consistently in day-to-day work.
Responsibilities
Management Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for establishing, implementing, and reviewing this Health and Safety policy. This includes providing adequate resources, information, instruction, and supervision to ensure safe working conditions and practices.
Managers and supervisors will lead by example, enforce safe systems of work, carry out risk assessments, investigate incidents, and ensure that employees receive the training and equipment necessary to perform their duties safely.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own Health and Safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. This includes following all safety instructions, using equipment correctly, wearing any required personal protective equipment, and reporting hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
Employees must not misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of Health and Safety and must notify their supervisor if they are unsure how to perform a task safely.
Client and Contractor Responsibilities
Movers Elephant and Castle expects clients and contractors to cooperate with our safety procedures. Clients should provide accurate information about access, parking, property layout, and any known risks. Contractors engaged to work with or on behalf of our company are required to follow our safety standards and relevant legislation.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We conduct risk assessments for our removal operations to identify potential hazards and determine appropriate control measures. These assessments cover activities such as manual handling of furniture and boxes, working in confined or cluttered spaces, operating in stairwells, handling bulky or fragile items, vehicle loading and unloading, and driving and parking near clients properties.
Safe systems of work are developed and communicated to all relevant staff. These systems are reviewed regularly and updated following incidents, changes in work processes, or the introduction of new equipment.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key element of our removal services, and we recognise the potential for musculoskeletal injuries if not managed correctly. Employees receive training in safe lifting techniques, team lifting, and the use of handling aids.
We provide appropriate equipment such as trolleys, dollies, moving straps, and blankets to reduce manual handling risks and protect both workers and clients property. All equipment is inspected regularly and maintained in a safe condition. Defective equipment must be reported immediately and taken out of service.
Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in line with legal and manufacturer requirements. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out to ensure they are roadworthy and suitable for the loads carried.
Drivers are responsible for conducting pre-use checks, securing loads properly, and following safe driving practices. This includes adhering to speed limits, parking safely, using hazard warning signals when necessary, and being especially cautious in residential streets and busy local areas.
Working at Client Premises
When working at client premises, our teams take particular care to protect both people and property. Walkways and access routes are kept as clear as reasonably practicable, and where possible, protective coverings are used to minimise damage to floors and fixtures.
We aim to minimise noise and disruption, and we respect any site-specific rules or safety requirements that clients may have in place, provided they are compatible with our duty of care under Health and Safety law.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risk assessments identify the need for personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, or high-visibility garments, this will be provided and must be worn as directed. PPE is considered a last line of defence and will be used in conjunction with other control measures, not as a substitute for them.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All employees receive appropriate induction training covering company Health and Safety procedures, emergency arrangements, and safe working practices for removal operations. Ongoing training is provided to maintain skills and knowledge, including refresher sessions where necessary.
Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that new and less experienced staff are properly supervised and that work methods remain consistent with training and risk assessments.
Accident, Incident, and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Records will be kept in accordance with legal requirements. Investigations will be carried out to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
We encourage open reporting and do not tolerate any form of victimisation of staff who raise genuine Health and Safety concerns.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency arrangements are in place for situations such as fire, serious injury, road traffic incidents, and other unforeseen events. Staff are briefed on how to respond in an emergency, including evacuation procedures where relevant and how to contact emergency services.
Where work is undertaken at client premises, our teams will familiarise themselves with any site-specific emergency arrangements and follow them accordingly.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Movers Elephant and Castle is committed to the continual improvement of its Health and Safety performance. We review this policy regularly and following any significant changes in legislation, operations, or organisational structure.
Feedback from employees, clients, and other stakeholders is welcomed and will be considered as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance safety in all aspects of our removal and relocation services.
